Rock gardens can go almost
anywhere on a slope, under an overwhelming deck in a
door yard or wherever you could put a small retaining
wall.
The rock garden does not have to be very big either. A
slight slope is good for looks and also for drainage
so there are no places for standing water.
To make a rock garden, you need lots of sun and
excellent drainage but you don't need great soil.
Typical rock garden plants do better in poor soil.
Choose small pots so there is only a small root-ball
to tuck into the cracks between the rocks. For the
really tiny crevices, you can tuck in really tiny
pieces of plants such as thyme and sedum.
The hardest part is giving in to the temptation to put
in too many plants. The spaces between the plants are
as important as the plants themselves. This goes with
rock, gravel or both materials.
To get water into the soil, use a wetting agent, which
is basic- ally soap, to reduce the surface tension of
the water. Add a teaspoon or so to a watering can of
water.
