One secret to a successful cottage garden is to select plants in varying heights from tall to medium to short for the front edges.

In cottage garden, edging plants spill over into stone or brick paths and soften the front of the border.

The tall background plants are
allowed to grow witout supports and even to gracefully fall over and intertwine.

To augment the cottage garden feeling, add accessories such as an old-fashioned fence, trellis or arbor. Keep the garden looking full and luxurious by planting lots of flowers but keep it weeded too, so the abun - dance does not spill over into sloppiness.

A cottage garden effect can be achieved with potted plants if you arrange the pots close together and intermix a number of different plants.
